II. Text comprehension

 

A. Main Idea

Learning a foreign language was one of the most difficult yet the most rewarding

experience of the author’s life.

 

B. Organization

Part 1 (Para.1) For the author, learning a foreign language is a difficult yet rewarding experience. (Introductory paragraph of the text)

Part 2 (Para.2--7) The author narrates the four different stages of his learning language experience.

1. The author enjoyed learning English in

junior middle school.

2. In senior middle school, the impatient English learning disappointed the author.

3. The large classes in the college intimidated the author and little progress was made in this period.

4.   The author felt that the online course, though intimidating at first, turned out to be the best way for him to learn English.

A. Cause and Effect因果法

Typical Sentences:

 B. Sequence of Time and Space (时空顺序法)

Typical Sentences:

1. My experience with a foreign language began in junior middle school.

(Para. 2)

2. When I went to senior middle school. (Para.3)

   3. However, that state didn’t last long. When I went to college. (Para. 4)

4. That was the situation until a couple of years later, when ...participated in the virtual classroom. (Para. 5)

 

 

IV. Language Learning

A. New active words

1. positive: a.

(1) effective; helpful 积极的,有用的

Translate:

别只是看着我,给我提些积极的建议吧。

Don't just watch me; give me some positive advice.

 

(2) definite, allowing no room for doubt 确实的,明确的

e.g. We still don't have a positive answer as to whether he will go with us.

他是否和我们一起去,我们还没有明确的答案。

 

2. access: n.. way of entering; right of using, reaching, or entering 入口;接近,进入

have/get access to: get the right of using or reaching sth.

Translate:

通过网上学习我们接触到许多新思维模式。

Through online learning we get access to many new patterns of thinking.

 

3.commitment: n.. a promise to follow certain beliefs or certain course of actions 承诺,许诺

Translate:

He felt he didn't have to make such a commitment to Mary.

他觉得自己没必要对玛丽作出这样的许诺。

 

4. embarrass: vt.. make one shy, ashamed 使窘迫,使尴尬

choose the suitable word:

5. benefit: n.. profit; good effect 益处,好处

Translate:

B. Phrases and expressions

1. feel like sth./doing sth.: want to do sth. 想做,想要

Change the expression:

What do you want to do on weekends?

2. trade (in) ... for... : exchange ... for... ……

Choose the suitable word:

Translate:

reach out for: try to get

For example:

You must reach out for any opportunity that comes your way.

For example:

5.   bridge the gap: close the distance between .....; join or bring closer together 缩小差距

Translate:

The decision is an attempt to bridge the distance between the rich and poor.

C. Sentence structures

1. Because of the positive method, I eagerly answered all the questions I could, never worrying about making mistakes. (Para.2)

Note:

“worrying about making mistakes” 是现在分词短语作状语

Change from clause to participle phrase:

When we climbed to the top of the tower, we saw a beautiful sight.

Climbing to the top of the tower, we saw a beautiful sight.

 

2. Not only did I lose my joy in answering questions, but also I totally lost my desire to say anything at all in English. (Para.3)

Note:

With "not only" or "only" placed at the beginning of a sentence, the sentence order should be inverted.

Fill in the blank:

Only in this way can you hope to finish the work at the end of this month.

In this text, the author, by sharing his experience of learning a foreign language with us, is trying to convince readers that learning a language, though a difficult and sometimes even a frustrating process, is well worth the effort.

Two major writing skills in this essay cause and effect and narration are frequently used writing devices. Students should have learned how to organize details with these two skills, and they are required to practice them after class.

Students are also required to memorize and practice the active vocabulary in this text. Some of these active words are old words but with new contextual meaning, while others are new vocabulary.
